What can you do with an old mattress box frame?

JoeOfTheJungle's picture

Today I got the honor of helping a friend move into his new house and at the end of the day, we were left with a few mattress box frames. You know, the things that go underneath the mattresses.

Knowing that the garbage collector wouldn't pick them up and there was no room to store them, we decided to break one open and see what's inside.

Sadly, there was nothing exciting inside, and in fact, it was a lot of nothing for something so big.

Here's what we got from one mattress box frame:

  • Cardboard, that when folded up tightly was the size of a large pizza box. This we just recycled.
  • Fabric, that when rolled up into a ball was about the size of a basketball. This we tossed it in the garbage as we shredded it up with the exacto knife, but could have had some use from it if we didn't have so much fun cutting through it. We should have just pulled the fabric off the wood, as we realized later that the staples just pop out the wood when pulling on the fabric.
  • Wood, which was the most valuable. This wood was used for their new garden, more specifically, for stakes for their tomato plants. We got 18 of these tomato stakes. It was a bit time consuming pulling out the nails with a hammer but it was worth it to be eco-friendly. So please EcoJudge users give us a few upvotes on this post, hehe.
