I know there still is a big debate over 2012 and if anything will happen or not. But I will not get into this debate, mainly because:
- enough people are debating over it
- nobody is getting any closer to proving it or not
- those 2 reasons should be enough!
So, with the year 2012 just around the corner, I will just take the “better safe than sorry” route, and post some tips on how to survive 2012, the eco-friendly way.
1) Get lots of food and water
Food and water will be the most important resources in a crisis, which is why I'm putting them first. Remember, the human body can survive a few weeks without food, but just a few days without water. So, guess what, water becomes “numero uno” in importance. STOCK UP ON WATER. Remember, the average healthy person should drink 6 glasses of water a day. Buy lots of canned food that is cooked easily and is not too dry or salty (because this will make you overly thirsty). Water and canned food doesn't usually go bad very quickly, so why not stock up?
2) Get a power source
This could be an electric UPS (uninterrupted power supply) to power things such as your cell phone, radio, lamp, … etc. But, make sure its powerful enough to keep your electronics running for a good amount of time. Have your rechargeable (possibly NiMH) batteries fully charged and also a few alkaline batteries just in case, because those don't loose their charge when they're just sitting around. Lots of matches and lighters to light candles or the barbecue for your food. Make sure your propane tank is full on the barbecue and possibly have a reserve.
3) Get some sources of light
Flashlights work really well but will consume lots of precious batteries if running all the time. So, candles would be good for nights where continuous light is necessary. LED flashlights would be really eco-friendly if you have some because they use the least batteries and therefore last a long time since LED's don't consume a lot of energy.
4) Warmth and clothing
Have lots of spare blankets, warm clothing, and know where they are. Sleeping bags are also good for extreme temperatures as they are designed to keep in warmth very efficiently.
5) Security and protection
This might be extreme (but better safe than sorry), and you never know what may occur. So, talk to your neighbors, make an agreement, “you watch our house, we will watch your house” and help each other out in emergency situations.
6) Educate yourself with a few movies
Some fun and educational “end of the world” type movies that may help you prepare for this event are:
- The Road (2009)
- The Book of Eli (2010)
Haha, tip #6 is just as a joke, but it MAY inspire you with some ideas, and also I really like those movies and wanted to post them ;)
