Organic Gardening

A few tips for you avid gardeners:

- Got slugs in your garden? Make a beer trap by digging up a glass jar or container in your garden, and pouring beer up to about 1/2 inch from the top. The trick? Slugs are attracted to the beer, which acts as a great bait for these pesky critters.

- What to get rid of pesky aphids and spider mites from your plants? Use 1 tablespoon of dish soap to 2 litres water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray your plants where they are infected with the bugs.

Black spots on leaves

Here is an easy and effective way to cure the black spots on leaves of your roses, flowers, and other plant leaves.
Make a solution of 1 part milk to 2 parts water. Pour this solution into a spray bottle. Spray on rose leaves or other leaves.
The trick? The lactoferrin in milk, which is a subfraction of whey protein, works great as a defungicide, inhibiting a wide range of fungus, bacteria and yeast.

Weed control

Instead of using harmful chemicals, do a little digging into your cupboard for vinegar (either regular white or pickling vinegar) and placing in a small spray bottle and praying those nasty weeds when they are seedlings. Using vinegar on them after they have matured will only kill the exposed plant and not the root. Soap-based products in liquid spray form is effective in spot-treating some weeds such as bindweeds.

Home-Made Fertilizers

1. Use dried coffee grounds around plants needing a nitrogen boost.

2. Crushed eggshells provide additional calcium for the soil.

3. At-home liquid fertilizer: Using seaweed and water in a container and allowing the seaweed to decompose (about two months) is an excellent source of potassium for the soil. Before applying it to your soil, dilute the seaweed as it will be concentrated.

4. Steve Solomon`s Organic Formula
What you need:
(Measure by volume)
4 parts seedmeal (canola, alfalfa, soy) or fishmeal
1 part dolomite lime

Fertilizers and insecticides (bonus for your pets!)

Instead of using pesticides and other harmful chemicals, use natural, environmentally friendly products that you can find in the stores. They are easy to use and are highly effective, containing minerals that are natural by products of partly decayed organic matter.

Natural Gardening

Natural Fertilizers: Adding nutrient-dense composts and other soil alternatives, such as manure, will help feed your plants over a long period of time while making them less vulnerable to insects and diseases. An all-purpose organic fertilizer that releases slowly can be added about once a season, since they nourish your garden as they decompose.

Municipal Sludge (Biosolids): Although these are labelled organic, they have been found to include heavy metals and other toxic chemicals that can build up in your soil. Therefore, avoid these fertilizers.
