Are Climate Awareness Campaigns Really Worth It?

Are climate awareness campaigns really useful?
I'll surprise you with the answer “yes and no”, which I believe will get your attention. Let's take one of the biggest climate awareness campaigns, Earth Hour, which requires you to turn off the lights for 1 hour. (Earth Hour: http://www.earthhour.org/). The problem is just that: the lights are off for only 1 hour. So how much electricity do you think is really saved? In Earth Hour 2010, close to 1 billion people participated from 126 countries.

Now lets go for some math.

Run Outside Instead of Using The Treadmill

Treadmills consume a lot of electricity, about 0.75 KWH (assuming a 30 minute workout). Running outside saves a lot of electricity and can be a lot more fun.

Buy Timers for your Seasonal Lights

Timers will automatically manage your seasonal lights (hopefully LED's) by turning them off and on for you. The lights don't need to be on all night.

Energy Star

When buying large appliances, always look for the Energy Star certified logo. These appliances are usually more energy efficient.

LG, 22.4 Cubic Feet, Bottom-Mount Refrigerator (Stainless-Steel) [LBC22520ST]

A family member just got one of these LG refrigerators (product code: LBC22520ST) and I'm so impressed with it that I must recommend this refrigerator to anyone purchasing a new (eco-friendly) one.

Pro's:

- It's very quiet, we couldn't even tell that it was running when we first turned it on, except for the light.

- It's energy efficient. It's energy consumption (kWh/year) is rated at only 465.

Con's:

- It's quite pricey as it cost just over $1000.

I will update this post if any issues or other points worth mentioning arise.
