This is the most eco friendly way to have a computer, since you only upgrade what you need. Power supplies that are at least 80% energy efficient is also a must.

Black or Dark Computer Screen Colors Don't Save Energy

If you're using an LCD or LED monitor, you won't save any energy. But if you're using an old CRT, then using a black or dark screen color would reduce energy usage.

Use Power Saver

All operating systems have some sort of power saver features. Set your monitor to turn off (not just screen-saver) after 5 minutes of not being used.

Solid State Drive's (SSD's) for the Eco Friendly Computer

SSD's are great for building your new eco friendly computer. They are much more efficient than the older hard disk drives because they consume a lot less power. In an SSD, there are no moving parts, so noise and heat is reduced greatly. With the reduced heat, you won't need as many fans either, thus reducing noise and power once again.

SSD's last a much longer time now due the quickly improved technology and thus they are definitely a win-win product for building your new green computer.

This is especially true for CPU's as they can be a major power hog with computers running almost 24/7 nowadays. Let the battle for the most Eco-friendly (and economical) CPU begin.

The most Eco-friendly and economical desktop CPU will be based on the following properties:

  • Energy consumption of CPU
  • Cost of CPU
  • Clock rate of CPU (multiplied by number of cores)
